Lakeside congregations observe Holy Week

The varied and various religious groups in the Lakeside area have made special plans for the observance of the holidays. Listed below are options for those interested in a worshipful experience.

Christ Church Anglican Fellowship will celebrate Palm Sunday on April 1 with the Blessing of the Palms and Procession followed by the Holy Eucharist Rite II at 10 a.m. in the ground floor space of Manix Restaurant, Ocampo 57 in Ajijic. The sermon topic will be “Life on the other side of pain,” based on Mark 13:1-39.

The Fellowship will celebrate the Feast of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on April 8, 10 a.m. with the Holy Eucharist Rite II in the ground floor area of Manix Restaurant. The service will include the blessing and lighting of the Paschal Candle and Renewal of Baptismal vows. The sermon topic by Father Danny Borkowski will be “The Mystery of the Experience of the Risen Lord,” based on Mark 16:1-8.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church will observe Palm Sunday on April 1, 10 a.m. with “The Death of Christ.” The Maundy Thursday service on April 5 will begin at 5 p.m. and the Good Friday service on April 6, will begin at 5 p.m. Lakeside Presbyterian will hold an Easter Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 8, 8 a.m. at the Hole-in-One Restaurant with a free breakfast offered after the worship service. The regular Easter Morning Service on April 8 will begin at 11 a.m. The Church is located at  Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 231 in Riberas del Pilar, just west of S&S Auto and Bubba’s Restaurant.

St Andrew’s Anglican Church will celebrate the Sunday of the Passion, also known as Palm Sunday on April 1 with the two services usually held at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. combined into a single service at 10 a.m. The service will begin outside at the columbarium altar. After remembering Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the clergy, choir and congregation will process into the church to begin walking the Way of the Cross. Father Winston Welty’s sermon, “Naked in the Garden … Clothed in the Tomb,” focuses on the difficulty of faith during hard times, and the way in which the events of this holy week address those spiritual crises.

Tuesday, April 3, Father Winston will conclude his six-week Lenten bible study focusing on the Gospel of St. Mark. Maundy Thursday, April 5, 5 p.m., the congregation will gather to remember Jesus’ institution of the Lord’s Supper during His last meal with the disciples on the night of His arrest. Good Friday, April 6, starting at 3 p.m., the congregation will stand at the foot of the Cross, remembering Jesus’ death and thinking of all the ways that the Cross is a mirror of themselves.

The St. Andrew’s choir will lend their music to all of the services during Holy Week, and all are welcome to join St. Andrew’s for worship. St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19 in Riberas del Pilar.

Lake Chapala Baptist Church will hold special Palm Sunday services at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. There will be a New Commandment Service on Thursday, April 5 at 6 p.m. and Easter worship on April 8 at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. There will be no Sunday school on Easter.

The Little Chapel by the Lake will hold a Palm Sunday service on April 1 at 11 a.m. and an Easter service at 11 a.m. on April 8. The Little Chapel is located near the Chula Vista Golf Club on the Chapala-Ajijic Carretera.

Jehovah’s Witnesses will meet on Thursday, April 5, 8 p.m. at Mama Chuy’s at Pepe Guizar 150 in Chapala to commemorate Jesus’ death. Sunday, April 8, they will meet at the Kingdom Hall at Santa Margarita 18 in Riberas del Pilar for a Bible-based discourse, “Is It Later than You Think?”
