Community steps forward to assist local feeding program

Thomas Music, the force behind the San Antonio Feeding Program, says he is grateful for money raised at a March 28 dinner.

The event was largely arranged by residents of the El Parque community and was the recipient of generous donations “in kind” by local business people that were used as door and raffle prizes. Among those businesses were restaurants Simply Thai, Café Negro, La Bodega, Panino’s, Angelicas’ Bistro, Tony’s Plus and Hole-in-One. Other businesses involved were La Paz Licores, Fit-for-Life, Betty’s Hair Salon and New Look Studio. Music was provided by DJ Howard. The funds raised at “An Evening under the Caribbean Moon” will be accounted for and added to the pot to keep the program going.

Music, who began the program two years ago with his friend Rich Bailey (now deceased), has kept the program alive and growing. Today the program provides a meal a day for between 60 and 90 people, including 28 house-bound area residents.

“The sad thing is that the majority of the people we feed are children,” says Music. “Most of them would have nothing to eat at all if we weren’t here. Many are kids of single mothers who just can’t provide for them. Of course, we feed lots of elderly people, too. Some of them have become like family because they are here six days a week.”

Music estimates that the meals, gas, utilities and the cook’s salary add up to more than 1,000 dollars a month, much of it coming from his own pocket. He is happy to accept cash or check donations and donations of staples such as rice, beans, sugar and pasta. To find him, just show up at Jesus Garcia 4 in San Antonio Tlayacapan, Monday through Saturday in the middle of the day. You’ll get to meet the dedicated volunteers and see the happy faces of those they serve.
