Weekly Worship - February 11, 2017

Unitarian Universalists

The speaker at the Sunday, February 12 Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Valentine’s Day service is the Rev. Dr. Paula Gable, visiting from the Frist Unitarian Universalist congregation in Ottawa, Ontario.

The title of Rev Gable’s sermon is “Cupid’s Conundrum.” As Valentine’s Day approaches, we are reminded of the joys of romantic love, which is wonderful. Yet, real, sustainable love requires commitment and maturity once the flames of passion burn less brightly. Still, a long-term relationship is a wonderful proposition and a rich way of spending one’s life loving another – if you know the “secret” – to be revealed! Fred Harland is the service leader.

The Unitarians meet 10:30 a.m. at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar, opposite the bell tower, on the north side of the Carretera.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

This Sunday at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, the congregation gives thanks and recognizes the ministry of all those who serve in worship: lectors, acolytes, altar guild members, greeters and ushers. It is due to their efforts that services run smoothly and peacefully.

Worship begins Sunday, February 12, 10 a.m., the bilingual children’s Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. and a coffee hour – a time of fellowship and welcome – follows the service.

An evening prayer service led by Rev. Robbin Del Nagro will be held Wednesday, February 15, 5 p.m.

St. Andrew’s offers a choral evening service, Thursday, February 23, 6:30 p.m.  The choir is preparing some beautiful traditional music to set the tone for worship.

The Company of Gentlemen will have their monthly luncheon Wednesday, February 22, noon at the Brew House Restaurant in west Ajijic. The Social and Hospitality committee meets for lunch Thursday, February 23, at the Food Container in Riberas del Pilar.

This Sunday the congregation collects donations to help support children attending Sunday School and their families in Jocotepec.

The Future Planning Seminars will begin again Saturday, March 25, 10:30 a.m. Wendy Carrel, a senior care specialist in end-of-life planning, will talk about palliative and hospice care, both presently available and planned for the future.

Todo Bueno, St. Andrew’s resale and consignment shop, needs donations, including clothing, kitchenware, electronics, bric-a-brac, furniture, appliances, books, collectibles, and whatever else you no longer need or want. Profits from the shop support a multitude of Lakeside charities.

Every Sunday, the feeding programs supported by St. Andrew’s welcome donations of non-perishable food items. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to rice, beans, pasta, oil, and salt.

St. Andrew’s is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Lake Chapala Baptist

Says Brother Bob Hendrick: “What the Bible says about the Bible is that it is alive and powerful. Some people might interpret that as meaning that it changes. They might say that “living” means it varies with the emotional flavor of the day. What once was true is no longer true. Sometimes folks fail to recognize the life in the Word of God. I sometimes hear someone say a particular preacher brings the scripture to life. Well the preacher’s job is to bring the scripture to light. The Bible, according to the Bible, is alive … and powerful … and sharper than a two-edged sword. That means that even after all these millennia, the Word of God does not need to be brought to life. It is alive and able to chase you down.”

Hendrick will give the sermon at Sunday’s 11 a.m. worship service at the Lake Chapala Baptist Church, Santa Margarita 147 in Riberas del Pilar.

Little Chapel by the Lake

Sunday, February 12, Little Chapel welcomes Wendy Johnson, who heads the church’s ministries in San Juan Tecomatlan, to talk about what’s being done in that community, and a vision for the future there. (This talk was rescheduled from January 29.)

Lakeside Presbyterian

Sunday, February 12, Pastor Ross Arnold of Lakeside Presbyterian Church continues his “Love One Another” series with a sermon entitled, “Pray for One Another.”

Prayer is a powerful and mysterious thing.  If God knows everything, then he knows what we need – so why are we commanded to tell God what we need in prayer? Pastor Arnold will consider this and other questions, so everyone is invited to join, learn and worship together.

February 12 is also the day for the monthly Second Sunday meal after worship at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, and (in honor of the annual Chili Cookoff) this month people are invited to bring either their favorite chili or an accompanying dish to share.

Lakeside Presbyterian is located at San Jorge 250 in Riberas del Pilar. Turn toward the lake at Mom’s Restaurant and the church is two blocks down on the right. English-language services begin at 10 a.m. and Spanish-language services are at 9 a.m. and noon. Everyone is welcome.
