The Meaning of Discipleship. “Disciple” usually brings to mind the 12 men Jesus called, all recorded in the Bible. But disciple only means “learner” or “student.”
We are all to be disciples of Jesus. In fact, the first word for Christians in the New Testament was not “Christians” but “disciples.” Assistant Pastor Carolyn Jensen explores what it means to be a disciple of Jesus in the 21st century.

Jewish Congregation
Members of the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation celebrate the gift of their new Torah Tuesday, October 22 with a parade to deliver the Torah to its new home. Celebrants will gather at Pancho’s Deli on the Carretera at 11 a.m. The Torah will be carried under a “chuppah” (a traditional marriage canopy). The parade will include dancing horses and Klezmer music. The procession will end at the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation at Santa Margarita 113, Riberas de Pilar, where there will be dancing in the courtyard of the synagogue.
Following the procession, the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation will celebrate the holiday of Simchat Torah which marks the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah reading and the beginning of a new cycle. The congregation welcomes the public to share in the festivities.

Christ Church
Christ Church Lakeside, a parish of the Diocese of the West in the Anglican Church of Mexico, will observe the 19th Sunday after Pentecost, October 20, by celebrating the Holy Eucharist Rite Two at 11 a.m. in La Huerta Events Center. Rev. Linda Ramos will celebrate and give a message with the theme, “Persistent Prayer,” based on Luke 18:1-8.
Coffee is available before the service and coffee and refreshments are served after the service.
Sunday School (in Spanish) convenes during the service at the Gospel Reading. Young people are welcome to share in this time of lessons and discovery.
The Lunch Bunch will meet for the potluck following the service.
The Bible Study meets Thursday, October 24, 3 p.m. at Elizabeth Carroll’s home, Galeana 35 in Ajijic. All are welcome to learn about the inspired contents of the Bible and share their insights with each other.
Unitarian Universalists
Sunday, October 20, at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Rev. Matt Alspaugh will present “Crossing Cultures.”
Most of us are migrants, people who’ve chosen to live in a culture different than our birth culture. How we do our living in a different land varies: some of us attempt to recreate “old home” behind walls and gates, others “go native,” others somewhere in between. What does our approach to multiculturalism say about our worldview, our relationship with other people? How do we deepen our awareness and engagement with people of other cultures? How do we learn to live in ease in a multicultural world?

Little Chapel by the Lake
“For we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses,” all of whom have experienced God’s good gifts, and have written and left their stories to tell us. Pastor Lahry spoke last week about the countless people in the Old Testament that witnessed God’s great love and mercy and spoke to them, personally. This week he will be continuing on the same theme with people in the New Testament.

St. Andrew’s Anglican
Sunday, October 20, the Reverend Jim Priddy will preside and preach at St. Andrew’s service of Holy Eucharist, 10 a.m. Coffee hour, a time of fellowship and welcome, follows the service.

Operation Feed welcomes donations of non-perishable food items every Sunday. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to rice, beans, pasta, lentils, garbanzos, oats, oil and salt. The parish distributes the donations to Lakeside’s neediest families.

Too often, if we try to size up another person, chances are we could be partially right or even partially wrong. We might ask, “Why am I making this judgment?” Usually, we are reinforcing our own sense of integrity. Our mouths do a lot more than we realize, sometimes beneficial, and other times harmful. What if our mouths bring the same result upon us?
Even among born-again Christians, do our statements bring testimony against us? This becomes a witness which is detrimental to the church and God’s kingdom. In Ephesians 4 the Apostle Paul says, “Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.” If people are sizing us up, what are they discovering? A shocking pertinent scripture is in Matthew 12:34. I have reworded this a little without changing the meaning. “Your mouth reveals what your heart is full of.” Jesus jolts us here. Pastors Paul and Susana Allen urge a self-evaluation. What is our mouth revealing about us?

Abundant Life Church
Are you a disciple? There are a lot of people who go to church and consider themselves a Christian but the question that will be asked this Sunday is if we are disciples. Disciples of Jesus have problems like everyone else but the way they deal with their problem is different than you may think. A disciple depends on the Holy Spirit to guide them in discovering the solution their problem. Sunday, October 20, Pastor Gary encourages us to face the good as well as the bad parts of life as a disciple. If you don´t yet consider yourself a disciple, you may want to consider it.

This week’s Satsang will be on Ramana’s “Forty Verses on Reality,” Verse 35: To abide in the Self is the only attainment. Ramana Maharshi was an Indian spiritual teacher of the 20th century. He taught self-realization and self-inquiry as the most direct way: looking within yourself to see what is always, and never comes and goes.
