All of Chapala’s Delegacíón offices provide PVC tube containers for collecting used batteries and keeping their toxic components out of the waste stream. Local ecology chief José Jaime Ibañez wants to promote the placement of similar containers at commercial outlets that sell disposable batteries. He likewise encourages consumers to go a step farther by purchasing rechargeable batteries and electronic devices to reduce the contamination of soil and water resources caused by tossing batteries into the trash bin along with other wastes that end up in landfills.
