Heritage Baptist Church

Writing to Hebrew believers spread across the Roman empire, Hebrews 2 teaches primarily about the death of the Son of God and how that relates to the Old Covenant. Firstly the sacrificial rites of the Old Covenant were shadows and inadequate until the law was fulfilled through the death of Jesus Christ. Secondly, they had a certainty in a shared hope, knowing that their hope in Jesus Christ alone was secure. The writer quoting from Isaiah 8:18, emphasizes the prophet’s certainty of that assurance. This despite Israel falling into idolatry and the hand of God’s mercy being removed. This was obvious during 400 years of silence before the advent of Christ. Both in 1st Peter (2:8) and Paul (Romans 9:33) confirmed this shame. Thirdly however, in trusting Jesus Christ, they that are given to Christ are assured of salvation and the glory to come. Thus in like manner we are encouraged, comforted and assured if we will remain in the faith and be obedient to Christ’s call, we will walk in victory also.
