Heritage Baptist Church
In a landmark sermon last Sunday, Pastor John Linton painted detailed pictures of crucifixion, a horrifying process of torture and death by slow asphyxiation. “Nevertheless,” he said, “those in hell would give anything to spend eternity on the cross instead.” Barabbas, the convicted criminal on the cross next to Jesus, is a perfect symbol of God’s sovereign grace and mercy. See the Prince of Glory mocked by all, even the prisoners nailed up beside him. Suddenly Barabbas, overcome by his own guilt and great fear of God, sees Jesus with the eyes of faith. He hears the innocent, dying Savior begging his Father to forgive his murderers and finally saying to Barabbas, “Truly, you will be with me in paradise today.”
We are all a breath away from heaven or hell. That moment will come to everyone, beckoning the sinner’s soul. As we reject our sin and come to Christ in true repentance, we experience the overwhelming power of the cross: God manifested there to take away the sins of the world, defeat death, and bring us to heaven’s joy.
