Open Circle

Open Circle has suspended its weekly program at the garden at Lake Chapala Society. Each week it highlights a different video of a past presentation. This week, Lila Wells presents “I Love David Sedaris.” It will be available for view Sunday, June 7, 10:30 a.m. at opencircleajijic.org.

pg12bWells will share a dramatic reading excerpted from several works of David Sedaris, one of her favorite authors. Sedaris is the best-selling author of several collections of autobiographical, self-deprecating essays, mainly describing his middle-class upbringing in the suburbs of Raleigh, North Carolina, up to his time living in France and now in England with his life partner, Hugh Hamrick, an artist and set designer. He also has written over 40 essays for The New Yorker magazine and been nominated twice for a Grammy Award.

Wells came to Lakeside from Asheville, North Carolina in 2015 and quickly became involved in theater. She has appeared at Lakeside Little Theatre (“Nunsense,” 2016), Bare Stage Readers Theatre, and has acted and directed at Naked Stage Readers Theatre.

Online benefit concert

Singer-songwriter-showman Jeffery Straker will give a live online concert Saturday, June 6, 7 p.m. to benefit the Foodshare program’s work with Poco A Poco, a community organization in the lakeside towns surrounding San Pedro Itzican.

The towns surrounding San Pedro have little to eat. The indigenous residents work in factories that have been closed, often working by the day when they can. Already suffering with the highest rate of kidney failure in the world, they now have little or no food.

To enjoy Straker’s concert and donate to Foodshare, see pocoapocosanpedro.com. You can also donate direct to Foodshare/Poco A Poco at that page. All the work is by volunteers and 100 percent of donations are used to purchase food for these communities.

American Legion open

American Legion Post 7 Chapala is now open for breakfast and lunch, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., serving at only 50 percent capacity. Face masks (except when sitting and eating) and social distancing are the rule of the day. You can call in orders for their daily special or frozen meals for pick-up at 376-765-2259.
