Open Circle returns
Sunday November 1, Open Circle is back with its weekly program on the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) east lawn, located alongside the gazebo.
The program, beginning at 10:30 a.m., will see David Ellison present “Fascinating Stories Behind Mexican Street Names.”
Ellison has long had a debt to pay to “Los Niños Heroes,” the martyred young cadets who defended Chapultepec Castle in 1847 during the U.S. invasion. A gifted raconteur, he will explain his debt and how he will pay it with his forthcoming book introducing expats to Mexican history. Ellison will regale his audience with captivating stories from his book-in-progress about some of Mexico’s inspiring heroes and colorful scoundrels.
Ellison recently retired after 36 years in education. He has been a teacher, mentor, school administrator, education columnist and community activist. He was honored as the New Haven Unified and the American Council of School Administrators Region VI Teacher of the Year in 1996.
In order to follow Jalisco safety precautions, attendance will be limited to 80 people. Reservations are required (reserve at www.opencircleajijic.org), the use of face masks is mandatory and temperature checks will be done on entry. During this period, it is recommended that attendees bring their own coffee or bottled water, and remove containers upon departure. As an additional service, Open Circle will record the presentations and upload them on the LCS YouTube channel.

Mudlark’s Pottery
LCS members are invited to join the new schedule of learning and independent working in Mudlark’s Pottery Studio on the South Campus. Health safety is a concern, so the number of participants is limited. For fees see the LCS website.
Introduction to Ceramics is open to all LCS members. This course will cover basic hand building techniques of construction, glazing and finishing, and meets Mondays and Fridays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Registration for the course is limited to six participants after the 25th of the previous month.
Open Studio, offering the chance to work independently, is open to all those who have completed one month of the Introduction to Ceramics course.
Octoberfest
Take advantage of the last chance to enjoy Octobefest next week, with German sausages from Chapala-based Berlin brand available at many lakeside stores, and beer from local breweries Corazon de Ajijic and Sabor Ajijic, which just came out with an Octoberfest brew.
Property taxes
Chapala City Hall is urging those with property tax debts to pay them soon, by offering up to a 75-percent discount on late payment surcharges, up to a 90-percent discount on fines and forgiveness of collection charges. They are also offering terms of payment options.
American Legion
American Legion Post 7 will hold a Halloween costume party Saturday, October 31, 4 p.m. The Legion also has tickets on sale for their Veterans Day dinner to be held Wednesday, November 11, with seatings from noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. The seatings are limited to 70 people. Cost is 300 pesos.
