Open Circle

Denning Chambers will expound upon “The History of American Music” at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, November 26, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.

From the slave ships to the 1970s music scene, Chambers will look at the origins and influences that created the purely American Spirituals, Gospel, Camp Town, Folk, Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Big Band, Rock ‘n Roll, and Pop.

Chambers began her career as a professional singer/musician in 1971. She has been an opening act for The Supremes, Kingston Trio, and Denny Doherty of the Mamas and the Papas. She has a master’s degree in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia, has lectured for the New York State Music Association on vocal timbre around the world, and written, produced and directed three musicals. She has been a music educator in public schools for over 20 years. She conducted the Lake Chapala Chorale for two seasons.

Ajijic Cares

World AIDS Day will be observed Friday, December 1 at the amphitheater on the Ajijic Malecon with a half-hour program beginning 5 p.m. The theme will follow the overall Worlds Aids Day theme this year, “Let Communities Lead,” with an emphasis on education and resources. Volunteers are needed to help with transportation of items to be set up from 10 a.m. and, once set up, to staff the registration and donations tables, and also to dismantle the entire set up at the end of the program. Charity Drag Bingo

Fonda Doña Lola is holding a charity drag bingo holiday edition Thursday, December 7, 5 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Puerta Al Ingles English classes. Tickets are 500 pesos and include eight rounds of bingo with prizes for the winner of each round. Come dressed in your holiday best and win the ugly sweater contest. Tickets available at Fenix Realty, Lucky Bar and Puerta Al Ingles.

Veterans meet

All U.S. veterans are invited to come to the monthly meeting of American Legion Post 9, Thursday, December 7, 2 p.m. at Mama’s Musical Bar.

LCS Xmas fair

Christmas gifts, arts, crafts and food will be on sale at the Lake Chapala Christmas Fair Saturday and Sunday, December 8 and 9, noon to 5 p.m.

Some 70 vendors will be there and you can also find LCS kids art, Christmas cards and more. Admission is 50 pesos. Children 12 and under get free entrance.

Caroling

Lakeside singers are back for holiday caroling and looking for carolers to visit four lakeside assisted living homes on Thursday, December 14. Musicians Belva Velazquez and Dawn Radel will be accompanying the carolers. The list of carols will be available on December 4. Sistership circle

Kathleen Spaulding is putting together a Sistership Circle Saturday, December 16 at Villa del Angel in Ajijic, 2 to 4:30 p.m. The idea is to co-create a community of women empowering women with 100 other women around the world. To RSVP see soulcallworkshops.com/events.

Niños Incapacitados is holding Christmas Cocktail Sip Tuesday, December 19, 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the home of Bonnie Newman in Ajijic.
