Green weekend at Gourmeteria

American School Art Fest Saturday

Tata Consultancy Services, widely known for its IT services, consulting and business solutions for global businesses, is organizing the first local TCS RUN - 2015, to be held on Saturday, November 21.

Zoo allows kids a break 

Children can enter the Guadalajara Zoo for just one peso this weekend. The special offer is only for Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25. The regular price is 42 pesos. Adults pay 70 pesos as usual.

Get up early to see marathon Sunday

Exactly 4,000 runners (the maximum) have signed up to participate in the 31st Guadalajara International Marathon on Sunday, October 18. 

The 42-kilometer race begins at 7 a.m. at the Glorieta Niños Heroes, at the corner of Niños Heroes and Chapultepec.

The marathon follows a route along Chapultepec, Mexico, Francisco Javier Gamboa, Mariano Otero, Patria, Fidel Velazquez, Monte la Luna, Juan de Dios Robledo, Irineo Paz, Calzada Olimpica, Gonzalez Gallo, 16 de Septiembre and Agustin Yañez to the finish line at the Glorieta Niños Heroes.

The winners of the men’s and women races take home 58,000 pesos, second places 38,000 and third places 28,000.  The wheelchair race winners pocket 18,000 pesos. There are also monetary prizes for the top three placed Mexican runners. 

Canada guest at Puppet Festival

The eighth Festin Muñecos International Puppet Festival runs Monday, October 19 through Sunday, October 24 in Guadalajara.  Canada is this year’s guest of honor.  As well as shows, there are two book launches, puppet workshopa for children conducted by Hélène Ducharme from Canada, two interactive exhibitions, plus round-table sessions with some of the artists. 

The festival opens with “Los Siete Cabritillos” performed by Los Claveles Teatro of Spain on Monday, October 19, 4 and 6 p.m. at the Teatro Experimental de Jalisco (also Thursday, October 22, 6 p.m. at the Teatro Vivian Blumental). Among other highlights are two presentations by La Pir Espece from Quebec at the Teatro Vivian Blumenthal on Tuesday, October 20, 6 and 8 p.m.  Another Quebec group, Les Pas Sortable, will be taking their show to plazas, malls and pedestrian precincts in different parts of the city. Among the Mexican groups performing are Guadalajara’s El Tlakuache with “Los Sueños de Pako” at the Teatro del IMSS on Monday, Ocotber 20, 5 p.m.; Aquelarre Teatro at the Teatro Experimental on Tuesday, October 20  and 21, 6 p.m.; and Mano y Contramano from Xalapa, Veracruz at te Teatro Vivian Blumenthal on Saturday, October 24, 6 and 8 p.m.

Fiestas de October

A young boy is captivated by a magnifying glass as his friends have fun with a manual typewriter (remember them). The children were enjoying themselves in the mock-up of famed detective Sherlock Holmes’ study, part of the Elemental, mi querido Watson” (Elementary my dear Watson) display at the Fiestas de October fairground.  Sponsored by the city’s Trompo Magico children’s museum and the Jalisco Family Development Agency (DIF), the stand aims to stimulate children’s interest in “creativity and literature,” says DIF  President Lorena Jassibe Arriaga.  The fairground is open daily at the Benito Juarez Auditorium (Periferico and Alcalde) through November 1. The state fair offers a range of attractions and activities, similar to a state fair in the United States, but with a distinct Mexican flavor.

Halloween fun at Amsoc

The American Society of Jalisco (Amsoc) hosts its annual Halloween bash on Thursday, October 29.  This year’s event will be held in conjunction with Oktoberfest and features fine German food and imported beer on tap. On the menu is authentic Bratwurst and sauerkraut, potato salad, tossed salad, and apple pie for dessert. 

Tickets are available at the Amsoc front desk at 120 pesos each. The fun continues after lunch with a Halloween costume contest and raffle. Both offer fabulous prizes.

Annual state fair begins with parade

Guadalajara’s month-long state fair, the Fiestas de Octubre, grinds into life on Saturday, October 3 at its traditional site, the Benito Juarez Auditorium complex on the northern Periferico (intersection with Av. Alcalde).
