Baseball
The La Manzanilla Baseball Club’s annual seven-inning game between the club kids, their coaches, dads and several “old phart” expats took place Saturday, February 28. The mixed teams, Lobos vs Tigers, was a spirited affair. The Lobos leapt out to an early big lead by taking advantage of some Tiger sun glare errors and strong hitting. The Lobos looked to be cooked but they crept back in the mid innings with their own aggressive base running and a few ‘seeing-eye’ drives that went through Lobo gaps to the end of the field. The back and forth featured some crowd pleasing highlights by both the rag tag men, many of whom had not played in years, and the young guns who showed their skills built through the fine coaching led by Patti, Scottie and a host of awesome volunteers throughout the year.
Lending Library Project
A few winter seasons ago Susan O’Riley discovered La Manzanilla for the first time. That first season was spent getting to know the village, the local nonprofits and community projects. She thought La Manzanilla would be the perfect place to set-up a library. She made plans to return the following winter and got the project underway.
La Manzanilla’s Supper Club
A few weeks ago I received a small flyer inviting me to, La Manzanilla’s First Supper Club. The flyer let me know I could expect exquisite Mexican cuisine, the date and time, and a phone number to call to reserve my spot. No information about the sender or location was given on the flyer. It simply stated call to reserve and find out the location. Very intriguing, so I called and made my reservation.
A new year and lots of new businesses have cropped up in our little village.
The visiting holiday revelers have packed it in and headed home. We had a great holiday season with tour buses lined up on the streets, stores running out of totopos and tomatoes, and the one tortilla factory in town opened from sunup to sundown trying to meet the demand for fresh tortillas. We won’t see that many national tourists until Easter.
Christmas Tree Festival
For eight years running the Christmas Tree Silent Auction Festival has marked the kick-off to La Manzanilla’s holiday season.
