Justice Palace uses art to promote ‘humanistic values’

The august halls of the Palacio de Justicia are graced this month by an exhibit of 11 medium-large format, surrealistic paintings entitled “Erótica Animal” by Tapatío artist Aram Cortes. The stately cream and stone palace, where Jalisco’s wheels of justice turn, was built in 1588 and is located next to the entrance to the Degollado Theater in the historic center of Guadalajara.

Cortes’ graceful work blends images of birds, fish and reptiles with the human female form, using overlays of bright colors and subtle transparencies. The artist, only 27 years old, has received honors such as in the annual Salón de Octubre competition. He has shown his work in many venues, including one in Paris, although this is his first individual exhibit.

The Cortes show is the fifth this year at the Palacio de Justicia and magistrates there say they are hosting art exhibits to demonstrate institutional transparency, concern for society and humanistic values.

Entrance to the show, which lasts until October 25, is free. Visitors simply register with the guard at the entrance to the Palacio de Justicia, located at Hidalgo 190, between Belén and Venustiano Carranza, and enter the ground floor to view the show. Its hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday. The building’s traditional patio and fountain are flanked by a striking mural done by Guillermo Chávez Vega.

Other individual art exhibits in the Degollado area this month are at the Palacio Legislativo (corner of Pino Suárez  and Hidalgo) and at the Secretario de Turismo in the Plaza Tapatia.
