The beauty & strength of Frida

An uninspiring building at the corner of Avenida Chapultepec and Montenegro has been completely transformed following an intervention by a well-known international, urban artist who has made a name for himself by creating large distinctive murals of women, often dressed in elegant clothes, and wearing masks and pristine make up.

“My work centers on representing strong women, without trying to objectify or sexualize them,” Fin Dac told news media this week during the creation of “Magdalena,” a stunning depiction of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.  Fin Dac and his helper, Brett Crawford, had some narrow escapes from summer thunderstorms as they completed the mural in less than ten days, ready for its inauguratio Monday, July 15, 7 p.m.

Who is Fin DAC?

Fin DAC, the creator of the new Frida Kahlo mural on Avenida Chapultepec, was born in Cork, Ireland, and now lives and works in London.

Coming from the world of advertising, he started making street art in 2008. His combination of traditional portrait techniques and stencils – which he dubs Urban Aesthetics – crosses the boundaries of conventional street art. He fights against stereotypes and gives the women he paints the opportunity to display their personal characteristics without prejudiced assumptions.  Eschewing gallery exhibits, he has painted walls all over the world and says he gets his inspiration from dark and graphic novels by authors such as Francis Bacon and Audrey Beardsley.
