The top 5 tips for building a house in Mexico

Have you ever wanted to build a house in Mexico? Perhaps you’ve imagined constructing a simple casita that could bring in rental income and speed up your retirement timeframe.

Here are my top five tips to make your construction experience a positive one:

A strong vision

1. To make it through this process you need more than desire, you need a strong vision. You should be able to passionately describe and enroll other people in your dream whether or not they are as enthusiastic about it as you are. If you don’t know anything about construction, architecture or space planning then I suggest you buy a ready-made house. Having a house built for you by a vetted contractor or experienced team of builders means having an interpreter to avoid losing important details to language barriers. Relying solely on translation apps will invariably lead to confusion and mistakes that will waste time and money when work needs to be re-done. Buying into a Mexican real estate development in which the house may (or may not) be built for you at some future date is not a route I typically advise my clients to take. I’ve heard too many tales of broken dreams and lost funds to recommend that you rely on verbal promises or even written contracts.
