Mayan Train ticket sales: What you need to know

The launch of ticket sales for the long-awaited first trip of the Mayan Tourist Train generated a feverish response.

pg7aAll tickets for the scheduled December 16, 7 a.m. journey between Campeche and Cancun were sold out just minutes after going on sale on the eticket website on December 1, leaving many interested parties with a “Sold Out” message on their screens., the federal government reported.

Demand for tickets “reflects the enormous expectation and enthusiasm that this transportation project has generated,” said a press release from the federal government, which built and will operate the line.

Tickets went on sale on eticket for two daily train journeys between Campeche and Cancun, the first section of the line that will go into operation in a week’s time. However, these were only available between December 16 and 20. At the Reporter’s press time (the evening of Thursday, December 7), some of these schedules had also sold out.  The trains run in both directions and depart each destination at 7 and 11 a.m. The ride takes about six hours.

The online reservations page can be accessed through the official Tren Maya website (trenmayaa.com.mx) or directly from eticket.mx.
