Rainy season vocabulary lesson

Here are common Spanish terms you may hear or use in reference to the temporada de lluvias, paired with their English equivalents:

llover = to rain; la lluvia = the rain; gotas de lluvia = rain drops

está lloviendo = It’s raining

lovizna = light drizzle; lloviznar = to drizzle

está lloviziendo = It’s drizzling.

chispear = to sprinkle; chipichipi = strong steady sprinkle

está chispeando = It’s sprinkling

tormenta = storm; tormentón = thunder storm

chubasco = sudden storm; aguacero = downpour

llover a cántaros = to pour buckets, rain like cats and dogs

tormenta tropical =  tropical storm; huracán = hurricane; ciclón = cyclone

tromba, culebra de agua = waterspout

granizo = hail; granizada = hailstorm

nubes = clouds; nubloso = cloudy, overcast; neblina = fog

trueno = thunder; relámpago = lightning; rayo = lightning bolt

el viento = the wind; aironazo = strong wind; ventoso = windy, breezy

día ventoso = windy day; noche ventosa = windy night

hace viento = It’s windy; hizo mucho viento = It was very windy.

charco = puddle; inundación = flood; inundar = to flood; diluvio = deluge

el paraguas = the umbrella; un impermeable = a rain coat, slicker; botas = boots

un arcoíris = a rainbow
