US election night: ‘Beyond my wildest dreams!’

A roomful of happy Americans celebrated Tuesday night in Guadalajara as they gathered around a big screen at the American Society of Jalisco to watch U.S. midterm election returns. The election watch party, organized by Democrats Abroad in Guadalajara, attracted about 40 expatriates, many of them people who have lived in Guadalajara for decades

pg1b“Happy! Happy! Happy!” was how one voter from abroad described her mood around 9 p.m., when Rachel Maddow choked back tears on MS NOW, announcing rosy results in the House and Senate for Democrats in Republican strongholds such as Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, Iowa and Kansas. (Slightly later came Ohio, Michigan and Maine. Important governorships also went Democratic, notably in Georgia, where Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman in the country to become governor.)

“They’re going to be selling chunks of the East Wing like they did the Berlin Wall,” crowed a Massachusetts voter, referring to President Trump’s demolition of the historic part of the White House in October, 2025, to make room for constructing a ballroom. “Tonight was beyond my wildest dreams!” he added.
