Three athletes from Jalisco brought home medals from the London 2012 Paralympic Games, in which Mexico overcame its 20-medal haul of Beijing 2008, snapping up 21 medals, including six golds.
Competing in his fourth Paralympics, Guadalajara’s Arnulfo Castorena won a silver medal in the 50-meter breaststroke category, while fellow swimmer Pedro Rangel Haro took home bronze in the 100-meter event. Judoka Eduardo Avila Sanchez won a bronze.
Mexico finished the games 23rd in the medal table, which was led by China with a whopping 231 medals. Great Britain finished in third place, the United States sixth and Canada 20th.President Felipe Calderon and First Lady Margarita Zavala were keen followers of Mexico’s athletes. Calderon called to congratulate every athlete who won a medal while his wife attended the opening ceremony, spent time with the Mexican team and congratulated the medal winners via her Twitter account.
