For the second time this year, world famous Spanish matador Julian “El Juli” Lopez has had to cancel a scheduled bullfight in Guadalajara.
Lopez was due to make an appearance at Tlaquepaque’s Plaza de Toros El Cenenario on Saturday, but he is currently in hospital in Sevilla, Spain after being gored in the right thigh at the city’s Maestranza bull ring on Friday, April 19.
Lopez suffered severe damage to his thigh muscles and the femoral vein and underwent immediate emergency surgery at the bullring infirmary. He then required a second operation to stem the bleeding the following day, plus drainage and antibiotic treatment to avoid infection. He has since gradually recovered, with the matador’s latest medical report, released midday Thursday, saying, “in the past 48 hours he has continued to show improvement.”
Lopez has been hampered with bad luck in 2013, having already cancelled a performance at Guadalajara’s Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso on February 3 after he was injured in car crash.
Lopez will be replaced in Tlaquepaque on Saturday by Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza, a highly acclaimed Spanish Rejoneador (horseback bullfighter).
