Young Tapatio golfer earns PGA Tour card, kicks off new season

Guadalajara-born golfer Carlos Ortiz has earned full exemption for the 2014-2015 PGA Tour after a stellar season on the Web.com Tour, during which he won three titles and placed third in the money rankings, earning  515,000 dollars.

Ortiz made his full tour debut  Thursday in the opening event of the new season – the Frys.com Open at the Silverado Country Club and Resort in Napa, California.

After the first round, the Tapatio is tied for 44th after shooting a respectable one-under -par 71, five shots off the lead.

Ortiz, 23, is the first player to win three tournaments in one season on the PGA’s development tour since 2009.   He was also named the Player of the Year on Tuesday after a vote by his fellow competitors,

Ortiz’s scintillating early season form saw him win two of the Web.com Tour’s first three tournaments, but he faded somewhat and had a disappointing end to the 25-tournament season.

Ortiz was given a sponsor exemption to compete in the 2014 PGA Memorial Tournament, where he made the cut and finished tied for 65th.
