Passions will be inflamed once more as the latest edition of the historic soccer rivalry between the Guadalajara  Chivas and America of Mexico City unfolds at the city’s Omnilife Stadium on Sunday, April 26, 6:30 p.m.

Fans are hopeful the game lives up to its moniker of “El Clasico.”  America are the reigning Liga MX champions, but Chivas have been in tremendous form and currently top the league standings, with a playoff spot virtually guaranteed.

Both teams will be eager to improve on their last outings. On Tuesday, Chivas lost the Copa Mexico final against Puebla 4-2, while on Wednesday, America could only manage a 1-1 tie with Montreal Impact of the MLS, in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final.

In other soccer news, 42-year-old Cuauhtemoc Blanco, one of Mexico’s most recognized and enduring players, hung up his boots, playing his last game for Puebla in their midweek victory over Chivas.  He scored 38 goals in 120 appearances for his country, and wore the jersey of ten different Mexican clubs, although the majority of his career was with America.  Blanco, a charismatic and often polemic figure, is running as the Social Democratic Party’s candidate for mayor of Cuernavaca.
