Charros’ season ending in shame

They started so well, scoring 17 runs in their opening home game back in October.  But it’s been a downhill ride since then.

As of press time, the Charros de Jalisco were propping up  the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol table, 9.5 games behind the leaders, and 5.5 adrift of sixth place, with seven regular season games to play.

Tuesday’s 10-3 loss in Mazatlan was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for the Guadalajara-based team. Barring a miracle, they have no realistic chance of making the playoffs – even though a generous six of the league’s eight teams qualify.

Despite the gloom on the field, supporters are still getting behind the Charros, mostly because of the cheery atmosphere that characterizes home games at the city’s Estadio de Besibol. Given that the Charros won’t be making an appearance in the playoffs starting in January, there are now only three remaining opportunities to catch the team in action here in the city: a series against Culiacan running Wednesday, December 28 through Friday, December 30. Games start 7:15 p.m. at the stadium located two blocks from the Auditorio Telmex, just off the Periferico Norte. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, or through Ticketmaster.

Despite their lowly position, the Charros are always fun to watch. Play ball!
