Charros’ nightmare 2016: five coaches & 19 foreign imports

Armando Navarro, the president of the Charros baseball team, is taking full responsibility for the team’s disastrous performance in this year’s Mexican Pacific League season.

The Charros ended the season in last place in the general standings, missing out on this month’s playoffs by a wide margin.

“I apologize to the fans. I’m the one who hires the coaches and players,” Navarro said in a recent interview. “But we’ll make sure this won’t ever happen again.”

Amazingly, the Charros used five coaches during the three-month regular season, and tried out 19 different foreign players, none of whom made an impact. Mexico’s Manny Rodriguez, the LMP’s 2015 player of the year, topped the Charros’ batting stats, with a .325 bating average, 30 RBIs and six home runs.

Despite the poor results, loyal fans still kept turning up to games at the stadium in Zapopan.  Attendance at Charros games was the fourth highest in the eight-team league, averaging around 8,900 per game. This was slightly lower than the league average of 9,797, a figure that was boosted by the 554,737 fans who attended Tomateros de Culiacan games.  Attendances in the league were up by four percent compared to 2015.
