Mexico’s passionate football fans will be out in strength and in fine voice Sunday, November 19 as the NFL returns to the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City for a mouth-watering match-up between the New England Patriots (7-2) and the Oakland Raiders (4-5).
This is the third NFL game to be held at the 95,000-capacity stadium.
Initial reports that the stadium sustained damages in the September 19 earthquake turned out to be false. The all-clear to stage the game was given after a thorough check of the facility.
Some 35 related events are taking place in the capital in the lead up to the game, including a fan fest zone in the Zocalo.
Tickets for the game sold out within hours of going on sale. Kick-off is at 3:25 p.m.
NBA
The Brooklyn Nets will play two regular season games against the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Miami Heat, when the NBA returns to Mexico City in December.
The games will mark the first time the NBA has hosted four regular season contests in Mexico in the same calendar year. Last January, the Phoenix Suns took on the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs, also in Mexico City.
The Nets-Thunder contest will be the 25th NBA game to be held in Mexico, which has hosted the most NBA games of any country outside the United States and Canada.
The Nets play Oklahoma on Thursday, December 7, and Miami on Saturday, December 9 at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico.
MLB
Major League Baseball has announced plans to hold a three-game series in Mexico for the first time since 1999. The Los Angeles Dodgers will take on the San Diego Padres May 4-6, 2018 at the Palacio Sultán, home to the Sultanes de Monterrey.
