Despite various players, coaches and referees testing positive for Covid-19 in recent weeks, Mexico’s top soccer league, the Liga Mx, will kick back into action next week.
Professional sports in the United States are also preparing for a restart: MLB is set to begin July 23 and the NBA season will resume on July 30, while Major League Soccer (MLS) is already under way.
The Liga Mx “2020 Apertura” tournament will start on Thursday, July 23, concluding in mid-December. This season’s competition has been renamed “Guardianes 2020” in honor of the medical personnel bravely battling the coronavirus pandemic.
The 17-game regular season and playoffs will be played in empty stadiums. Depending on the evolution of the pandemic, the possibility of allowing some fans to watch games later in the year has not been ruled out.
