Thanks to a 10-8 win on Sunday at the Pan Americano Stadium in Zapopan, the Mexican Baseball League (LMB) debutante Mariachis de Guadalajara completed a 3-0 series sweep against the Durango Generals.
Following their confident start to the season at home, the LMB new boys traveled north to face the Saraperos de Saltillo in a three-game series,Tuesday to Thursday of this week.
After a narrow 4-3 victory in the first game, the Mariachis’ winning streak ended Wednesday with a 5-7 loss. As of May 26, the team stood at 4-1, and in third place in the LMB’s eight-team Northern Division.
Several faces on the Saltillo roster would have been familiar to fans of the Jalisco Charros, which plays in the winter Mexican Pacific League (LMP). Among their opponents were Charros captain and star hitter Manny Rodriguez, as well as catcher Fernando Flores.
The Mariachis’ key signing, former Major League Baseball star Adrian “El Titan” Gonzalez, proved his worth in the first three encounters, posting a batting average of .462. But such was the Mariachis’ dominance over Durango that Gonzalez didn’t top the team’s batting stats. Two other players – Jesse Castillo (.538) and Carlos Mendivil (.625) – had even better numbers.
The Mariachis’ next home series is Tuesday to Thursday, June 1-3, at the Pan Americano Stadium, also against the Saraperos de Saltillo. See boletomovil.com or call 333-0377-969 for ticket information.
