Two US Open champions likely in Zapopan Open field

Later this month, Tapatio tennis fans may get the chance to see Emma Raducanu, the 19-year-old British sensation who captivated American hearts by winning the U.S. Open last fall without loosing a set in only the second Grand Slam of her career.

Raducanu (world ranked 18th) tops the list of potential entrants to the Zapopan Open 2022, scheduled February 21 to 27 at the Pan American Tennis Center.

Two top U.S. players could also be in the field: Madison Keys (51st), runner-up in the U.S. Open in 2017, and a loosing  semi-finalist to eventual champion  Ashleigh Barty in last month’s 2022 Australian Open; and Sloane Stephens (67th), the winner of the 2017 U.S. Open and the 2016 Acapulco Open.

Fifteen of the world’s top 100 women’s tennis players have tentatively signed up for the tournament, which should build on the success of the  2021 WTA Finals that was held at the same venue in November last year.

A crowd favorite will be Sara Sorribes of Spain (35th), who returns to Guadalajara to defend the title she won in March 2021, when she defeated Eugenie Bouchard of Canada 6–2, 7–5 in the Zapopan Open final.
