Atlas win back-to-back soccer titles

Soccer fans in Guadalajara will never forget these times.

pg24cAfter failing to win Mexico’s top crown for 70 years, the city’s Atlas team now boasts two in a row. Somos bicampeones!

Atlas traveled to Pachuca last Sunday after winning the first leg of the Liga Mx final 2-0 in their home Jalisco Stadium the previous Thursday.  Several thousand noisy fans accompanied the players to the state of Hidalgo, north of Mexico City, filling one entire end of Pachuca’s stadium in their red-and-black and colors.

Nerves jangled when Pachuca took the lead in the first half, but these calmed after half time when Atlas were awarded a penalty,  dispatched with ease by Argentine striker Julio Furch.

Another goal for Pachuca made for a tense final 20 minutes, but Atlas defended resolutely to secure a 3-2 aggregate score over the two games and lift the trophy.
