Canelo triumphs but must undergo surgery

In an unanimous decision, Tapatio boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defeated Gennadiy Golovkin in a much anticipated “trilogy” fight that closed the chapter on this arch rivalry.

pg14c copyAlthough Canelo was deemed fortunate to come away with a win and a tie in their first two encounters, on September 17 in Las Vegas he was the clear victor, proving that age is usually the great leveler, with the 40-year-old Golovkin unable to land any significant damage on a man eight years his junior.

Not that Canelo was particularly at his best. Many commentators noted that he looked fatigued toward the end of the fight, which allowed the Kazakhstani fighter a brief resurgence in the final rounds, although to no avail.

Canelo has fought at three different weight classes in his last eight fights, something that may be affecting his fitness levels, some experts noted.

In addition, he has been carrying a left hand injury for some time, which may have influenced his defeat to Russia’s Dimitri Bivol last May in the light heavyweight division.
