Mexican match-up

Guadalajara boxing superstar Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez steps into the ring with fellow Mexican Jaime Munguía on Saturday, May 4, to defend his undisputed super middleweight crown in Las Vegas.

This will be the first time Canelo, 33, has faced a fellow countryman in seven years. The Tapatio has a career record of 60 wins (39 by KO), two losses and two ties, compared with 27-year-old Munguía’s 43 victories (34 by KO) and zero losses. Despite that unbeaten record, the more experienced Canelo is the clear oddsmakers’ favorite. The fight will be broadcast on several free-to-air Televisa and TV Azteca channels, and ESPN, and is set to start at around 9 p.m.

Chivas aiming for glory

The Guadalajara Chivas will play Toluca in the quarter-finals of the Liga Mx 2024 Clausura tournament. The Chivas finished sixth in the regular season standings and Toluca third.  As of press time, it appeared that the first game of the two-leg quarter-final would take place at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara on Wednesday, May 8 and the return game in Toluca on Saturday, May 11 (dates and times subject to change). The last time the Chivas won a Liga Mx title was in the 2016-17 season.

Astros on home stretch

Only four more home games in the Cibacopa (Pacific Coast Basketball Circuit) regular season remain for the Guadalajara-based Astros de Jalisco. The games will be held at the Astros Arena on Avenida Avila Camacho (two blocks from Plaza Patria) on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 7 and 8, 8:15 p.m. (against Tijuana Zonkeys) and Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, 8:15 p.m. (against Obregon Halcones). The Astros’ 20-8 win/loss record virtually guarantees the team a place in the playoffs. The Astros have been the Cibacopa champions for the last two seasons, but have never managed to win the tougher National Professional Basketball League, which starts on July 4.

Charros floundering

The Charros de Jalisco continue to struggle in their debut season in the Mexican Baseball League (LMB), posting a 6-11 win/loss record as of Thursday this week, and lying ninth in the ten-team LMB Northern Division standings, six games back of leaders Monterrey. The next home series for the Charros at their stadium in Zapopan is scheduled Tuesday to Thursday, May 14-16, against the Rieleros de Aguascalientes (all games start at 8 p.m.). Upcoming series are Tuesday to Thursday, May 28-30 (Pericos de Puebla), and Friday to Sunday, May 31-June 2 (Tigres de Quintana Roo). Tickets from boletomovil.com. See charrosjalisco.com.
