Mexico’s most successful soccer team, Club América, has added another achievement to its storied history by winning its third consecutive Liga MX championship — a feat unprecedented since the league adopted its split-season format in 1996. (* see below)
América secured the title by defeating Monterrey with an aggregate score of 3-2 over two legs. A 2-1 victory at home in Mexico City on December 12 was followed by a 1-1 tie in Monterrey four days later.
This triumph marks América’s 16th Mexican league title, extending their lead as the most decorated team in the country. Their first championship dates back to 1966. América’s fiercest rivals, Chivas de Guadalajara, trail in second place with ten titles, their most recent win coming in the 2017 Clausura tournament.
* The Apertura (Opening Tournament) is played in the second half of the year (July to December), and the Clausura (Closing Tournament) in the first half of the following year (January to May). Each tournament crowns its own champion, meaning two champions are awarded each year.
