Former Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro transitions from politics to professional soccer coach in Spain

Enrique Alfaro Ramírez, the former governor of Jalisco, has officially taken a significant step away from his political career by joining the coaching staff of Real Valladolid, a team currently competing in Spain’s La Liga 2 (second division). Alfaro, who served as governor from 2018 to 2024, announced the move on November 21, marking a bold new chapter in his professional life.

The 52-year-old has long harbored an interest in football management, and his transition into this field follows several years of preparation. Alfaro completed coaching studies at the Argentine Football Association (AFA), gaining hands-on experience with the youth teams of Chivas de Guadalajara, a club with which he has a personal connection. He further honed his skills by earning a Master’s degree in Football Management from the prestigious European University of Real Madrid, graduating in June 2025.

As an assistant coach under Uruguayan manager Guillermo Almada, Alfaro will face the challenge of helping Real Valladolid secure promotion back to Spain’s top flight, La Liga, at the end of the 2025-2026 season. The club, which was recently acquired by the North American fund Grupo Ignite, is currently on track for direct promotion from the Segunda División.
