Hometown skating star reaches another Olympic final

Soccer, take a back seat. A Guadalajara-born athlete is drawing global attention in a sport rarely associated with Mexico.

Donovan Carrillo, who first laced up his skates in this city, has soared into the men’s figure skating final at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. 

pg1cThis isn’t a fluke — it’s his second consecutive Olympic final, cementing Carrillo’s status as Mexico’s undisputed ice king.

On Tuesday, he punched his ticket to the singles final, securing his spot with a strong short program. This marks Carrillo’s second straight Olympic final after Beijing 2022.

And Carrillo isn’t just competing for Mexico. As the only Latin American skater at these Games, the 26-year-old is also carrying the hopes of an entire region.
