Since December 1, Chapala’s Civil Protection and Fire Department (PCyB) has launched a campaign to detect the illegal sale of fireworks, which are in high demand during the Christmas and New Year season.
PCyB officers are currently inspecting street vendors, outdoor markets and commercial outlets to identify the sale of firecrackers, sparklers and other items containing pólvora (gunpowder). Residents are urged to avoid setting off fireworks and to prevent children from handling these dangerous objects.
However, some local social media networks have misinterpreted the directive, believing there is now a total ban on fireworks in the municipality. This is not the case. Coheteros—artisans who create rockets and castillo displays for local festivities—are allowed to sell and ignite their products if they hold official permits from the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Sedena).
The Chapala government warns that improper use of gunpowder-based items can cause serious or even fatal injuries. Additionally, fireworks can have negative effects on people with auditory sensitivities, pets, wildlife and the environment.
Residents may report unauthorized firework sales—a criminal offense—by calling PCyB headquarters at 376-766-5252.
