This year, the Jalisco citizen collective Proa31 installed 200 new community coat racks (percheros) across the state’s 125 municipalities, bringing the total to 1,212.
These coat racks are placed in public spaces to assist homeless individuals or those in need. While the hangers especially useful during cold weather, Proa31 operates year-round.
In Jalisco, the pecheros can be found in multiple locations, particularly outside health clinics, markets, stores, restaurants, academic institutions and government buildings, as well as in parks.
Proa31 encourages donors to hang clothing in good condition, such as jackets, jeans, sweaters, t-shirts, shirts, and blouses, as well as shoes.
In 2024, Proa31 expanded its initiative across the nation to include locations in 15 of Mexico’s 32 states.
