Ribera communities mark Día del Lago

Eight lakeshore municipalities in Jalisco and three more in the state of Michoacán united on Sunday, October 18, to celebrate the first Lake Chapala Day, proposed as an annual commemoration to promote the conservation of Mexico’s largest lake and raise public awareness of its environmental value.

pg1bThe program of activities in Chapala began with a 7 a.m. blessing at the Malecón, a symbolic gesture expressing hope for abundant and beneficial rainfall and appreciation for the lake’s environmental, social and economic impacts for the region’s inhabitants.

During the event, Chapala Mayor Alejandro Aguirre highlighted the lake’s connection to the community’s identity, the local economy, and the livelihoods of numerous families. He called on all citizens to help conserve the lake through everyday actions, such as keeping the shoreline clean, not throwing rubbish into drains, reducing water consumption, and fostering respect for the environment among younger generations.
