Speed cameras reduce city beltway fatalities

“We had 37.74 percent less deaths. There are 20 citizens who retuned home alive. There are 20 less families in mourning,” said Monraz.

Of the 317,159 tickets issued to drivers nabbed by speed cameras in the metro area in 2011,  237,950 were taken on the periferico.

December’s total of 46,379 was only superseded by July, when 47,379 tickets were issued.

Of the total, 122,944 – just over one-third – were paid. The remainder will be charged to drivers when they renew their annual registrations (refrendos).

Speeders snapped by traffic cops using “mobile” radar devices on major city arteries such as Lazaro Cardenas and Vallarta, were issued 79,209 tickets.

Monraz urged drivers to keep to speed limits, saying the lower fatality figures show the difference it makes.

The SVT is also looking at similar photographic technology that would automatically ticket drivers who run red lights.
