Green Cross paramedic killed in car crash

Pedro Israel Palos Coronado, 30, died shortly after the vehicle was hit by a green Honda Civic, whose driver fled. The culprit was later arrested while seeking medical attention, allegedly still under the influence of alcohol.

“It’s very unfortunate because we are dedicated to saving lives,” said Guillermo Arteaga, Supervisory Medical Officer in Zapopan, at  a memorial service later on Sunday.

The Cruz Verde is severely lacking in resources, with the Guadalajara branch equipped with just four working ambulances (and another 21 out of circulation and in need of service, many used for only spare parts) to serve the 1.5 million residents of the municipality. The staff field nearly 200 emergency calls per day but also remain short of medical supplies.
