Airport undergoes expansion

The baggage reclaim area will be expanded by 83 percent, with two new conveyor belts installed, said Miguel Aliaga Gargollo, director of the Pacific Airport Group (GAP) which runs the airport.

The customs area will also be expanded by 83 percent, with seven more desks installed, while the immigration area will be expanded by 77 percent, with an additional ten desks installed. The work is due for completion in September 2014.

Regarding GAP’s plans to build a second runway at the airport, which are subject to an ongoing dispute with local landowners, Aliaga said, “We will soon be seeking a meeting with the governor of the new administration to resolve the problem ... I think they will get something done in the end because the airport cannot stand still because of all the economic development in the region.”
