Fired city cops go on hunger strike

Many of the 137 municipal officers laid off after falling the screenings say they have not been told the grounds for their dismissal.

Some believe that behavior related to their personal lives had an influence, such as having extra marital affairs or their sexual preferences.

Martinez rejected suggestions that the cops were dismissed because they had links to organized crime.  “If that’s the case then why aren’t we in jail,” he asked.

Martinez said few of the fired cops have been able to find work and admitted some have been approached by drug cartels.

He asked Guadalajara Mayor Ramiro Hernandez to honor a promise made after he took office to find alternative jobs in the municipality for the laid off officers.

City hall officials agreed to meet with the protestors later in the week to discuss their situation.  The officers ended their protest after seven hours.
