Primavera fire controlled

According to the Secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo Territorial (Semadet), a group of weekend visitors are believed to have started the fire while holding a barbecue in the woods.  They may face prosecution as their car registrations were photographed by cameras placed in the forest, an agency spokesperson said.

Prevailing winds blew smoke and ash from the fire toward the metropolitan area, prompting a smog alert in two zones of the city.

The 30,000-hectare Primavera Forest, a federally protected nature reserve, is situated on the western edge of the metropolitan area and is often described as “Guadalajara’s lung.”  It is home to a huge variety of flora and fauna, including deer, coyotes and foxes.
