Seized stolen car parts on view to all

Had your car wing mirrors, tail lights, rims or bumpers ripped off by thieves? Or even a car radio stolen?

You can now check out a warehouse in Guadalajara opened  this week by Jalisco’s FiscalIa General that is housing hundreds of recovered stolen auto parts.

The storage center opened a few days after state police carried out a raid in a notorious zone near the city’s old bus station, where dozens of outlets brazenly trade in stolen car parts.

Police say officers secured five large warehouses on calles Cinco de Febrero and Los Angeles in the first operation of a new program being referred to as “Metropoli Seguro.”  They say they netted “thousands” of stolen parts.  More raids are planned on a regular basis, officials say.

Police say they arrested at least 40 people during the raid, although only eight have so far been charged.

Those looking to recover stolen parts must take proof of ownership of their vehicle (bill of sale). If they identify a part, officers from the Forensic Sciences division are on hand to check whether they correspond to the vehicle.  In the case that affirmation is given, the parts will been handed over after some paperwork is filled out.

As of Wednesday evening, 107 people had turned up at the warehouse looking for stolen parts, and 40 had been successful in recovering them, according to the Fiscalia General.

The warehouse is located on Calle 12, behind the Fiscalia General’s main office on Calle 14. It is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday to Saturday.
