Gerado Leon de la Cruz, one of the event’s organizers, said a recent proposal by a left-wing Jalisco state legislator for a Ley de Convivencia (civil union law) does not go far enough from a rights point of view.
“We want the same guarantees and rights as a heterosexual couple, including recognition by Social Security, housing benefits and to be able to bequeath.”
Leon de la Cruz said the issue of adoption for gay couples could wait for another day.
According to organizers, around 45,000 people turned out for Saturday’s colorful parade. Police said the figure was closer to 12,000.
In related news, the Colima State Congress is set to discuss a proposal to legalize same-sex unions, currently only lawful in Mexico City.
