No joy for bus owners/drivers after plea for higher fare

The demonstrators delivered a petition to Governor Aristoteles Sandoval and held up signs listing fares in other large Mexican cities, all of which are higher than Guadalajara.

The Jalisco Traffic Department (Semov) quickly issued a statement, noting that while bus owners had made some efforts to comply with new health and safety regulations, much more needed to done before a fare hike is approved.

In March, the state government revoked a one-peso increase to seven pesos following an horrific bus accident on the city beltway in which an 18-year-old student died. Sandoval demanded that bus owners and drivers fulfill a list of prerequisites before a new hike would be granted. These included drivers earning fixed salaries, having set working hours, undergoing training programs and wearing uniforms and IDs, as well as buses being installed with cameras, speed controls, GPS systems and electronic ticketing/pre-paid card systems.
