City's first public pet hospital a good option for low-income owners

Located in the Bosques del Centinela neighborhood of Zapopan, the hospital will provide a low-cost option for pet owners on a tight budget. Consultations are pegged at 50 pesos.

The facility will double as a teaching hospital for veterinary students studying at the UdeG’s Centro Universitario de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias (CUCBA).

The hospital is equipped with an  x-ray machine and a tomography scanner donated by the Jansen Animal Hospital in Torrance, California.  A pet nutrition foods chain has donated four treatment tables, an emergency carrier and four work benches.  Services provided also include electrocardiograms, parasite cleansing, clinical analysis, surgical procedures and hospitalization.

The second floor of the hospital is not operational and is expected to be kitted out in the near future as an area for postgraduate study and research.

The 3,600-square-meter plot of land for the hospital was donated by the municipality of Zapopan. Construction covers almost one- third of this area. The UdeG reckons the pet hospital is the largest of its kind in Mexico.

The university has invested around 40 million pesos in the hospital to date.

According to hospital director Mario Alberto López Amezcua, eight trained veterinarians will attend animals in morning and afternoon turns, assisted by students.   The facility anticipates attending to around 100 animals each day.

The UdeG says the hospital will be open around the clock to cater to emergencies.

The full address of the hospital is Prolongación Parres Arias 735, Zapopan. It is located about 1.5 kilometers north of the UdeG’s Centro Universitario de Ciencias Sociales on the northern city Perifierico (beltway).
