Local press photographers show support for murdered colleague

Around 50 Guadalajara-based press photographers and photojournalists gathered in the city’s Parque Revolucion to express their dismay at the brutal murder of photojournalist Ruben Espinosa and four women in Mexico City last week.

Espinosa, 31, who worked at the left-leaning weekly Proceso, was found shot to death at an apartment in the capital, along with four women.

Colleagues and friends of Espinosa have questioned whether the killings are linked to his criticism of Veracruz Governor Javier Duarte.

Espinosa had previously worked in Xalapa in the state of Veracruz, where he had been threatened o various occasions.

At least one of the women killed along with Espinosa was a well-known social activist.  Proceso reported this week that she had also received death threats.

The brutality of the killings – three of the women were raped, according to reports – has convinced many in the media that the crime was not a straightforward robbery.  Police say items were missing from the apartment that Espinosa shared with one of the women.

In the last ten years, at least 80 journalists have been murdered in Mexico, and 17 have disappeared. Three-quarters of these covered beats related to organized crime.
