Corona Market only five weeks from opening day

The Mercado Corona in downtown Guadalajara is quickly taking shape with the outside Y-shaped steel columns now visible.

More than half of the 589 puestos (stalls) are complete and, according to construction company Afronta Grupo Mexico, 320 will be turned over to traders within a week.

The concessionaires will then have to outfit the bare cement walls before they can set up shop when the new market opens to the public on September 15.

Stalls are only being assigned to vendors who had permits to trade in the original Corona Market that was destroyed by fire in May 2014. Floors and electrical installations should be finished in two weeks, the constructor says.

Apart from the unfinished vendor spaces, also awaiting completion are the underground parking lot, water and fire control systems, and bathroom facilities, which the constructor promises to have ready by opening day.

Municipal offices occupying the top two floors of the six-storey market building will be left in a rough state  until the incoming Guadalajara city council decides what their needs will be.
