Getting into and traversing downtown Guadalajara is taking double the usual time due to the closure of the Avenida Hidalgo tunnel that runs from the Corona Market to the Calzada Independencia.
Streets earmarked for alternative routing – in particular Juan Manuel, Reforma and Angulo – are becoming saturated at peak hours, even though traffic light synchronization has been revised to ease the flow of vehicles. The tunnel is being widened and expanded, and will be closed for two months. Meanwhile, Avenida La Paz has been converted into a temporary two-way thoroughfare to help reduce the traffic gridlock caused by the tunnel closure.
