More than half of metro area’s traffic cops could lose their jobs

An astonishing 500 out of 900 traffic cops in the Guadalajara metropolitan area have failed the “trust evaluations” (exámenes de control y confianza) that are designed to combat corruption and weed out unreliable officials.

At least 30 senior officers were unable to pass the test, Transportation Department (Semov) Director Servando Sepulveda revealed this week.

Because of the large numbers of failures, the officers will be replaced or reassigned in stages, Sepulveda explained.

Some of the officers had failed the test for the second time, and these will be the first to be removed from their jobs, he said.

At least 70 percent of the senior positions that become available will be filled by women, Sepulveda said.

Only 60 Semov cops have been dismissed in the past two and a half years – 19 of them for alleged corrupt practices.
